For each item and UTC day, the units traded at the insta-buy price are taxed at their average price, and the units traded at the insta-sell price at theirs. Every GE trade has a seller, and the seller pays.
The tax is the game's rule: 2% of the price, rounded down per item, capped at 5,000,000 gp per item, nothing under 50 gp. Items on the exempt list are left out entirely.
Taxing the average price instead of each trade's exact price can be a few gp off per unit near the 50 gp and 5m cap edges; it does not change the totals in any meaningful way.
Sectors use the same classification as the sector indices. A day with more than 5 of its 288 snapshots missing gets no estimate, so a gap never shows as a low day.
The daily numbers are the ones published in each daily market report, written once and never changed.
